Serendipity
Monday, 24 December 2007 12:47 pmWhen I was in middle school the library had an immense collection of short story anthologies, and I ate them up. Tales out of School, The Best of Fantasy and Science Fiction 50th Anniversary, City of the Dead, Moonchasers... I recall most of them because after I went on to high school (which had a much less interesting selection) I asked for a bunch of them for Christmas.
There was one particular collection, though, that I only remember two stories of.
One of them was about a blind minotaur, which I'm not sure I finished, and the main image I remember of that one was this little girl informing the minotaur "I heard you jacking off last night." The other one was called "The Way of Cross and Dragon" and I remember paging to it right off because, hey, dragons.
Whereupon I got a story of a space-age Gospel of Judas which came out something like... well, with no implication of quality on either side, it was like if the Da Vinci Code was in space and the whole Mary Magdalene thing was a conscious lie from an organization of conscious liars, so as to bring a bit more color to the world. Freaked me out not a little bit, but not so much that years later I would remember the byline.
Now years later, I'm bumming around on the Internet and all of a sudden I find out the author. The author, as it turns out, is George R. R. Martin.
I don't know, that probably sounds anticlimactic, but it gave me a bit of a chill and half the night I was thinking of Jon Azure Cross.
