Have acquired paid hours for my internship. Just have to restrain myself from blowing it all on lunches.

In my spare time, still drifting in a vortex of Dragon Age. Somehow, while I still haven't gotten back to work on Remembered Realms, I've taken the time to decide that if the games were to meander through a dimensional rift Veldrin would be a raging Anders fanboy.

Remembered Realms continues to spin in new and not unwelcome directions. Highlights of today's wordcount include Tarlyn trolling Mayae, plus Veldrin absolutely losing his shit due in part to a truly massive post-traumatic flashback.

I just hope I myself can retain enough presence of mind to keep up with my Adult Responsibilities as well.

A bunch of pre-chapter quotes I've devised for Remembered Realms; you may notice a lot of them have the same subject. Might as well put them out here, since I doubt I can use them all in any case.

Sadly, we lack your impressive martial history. In keeping with our faith, we have resorted to stealing some. )

If I ever get the gang out of Waterdeep, their next stop is likely going to be Eryndlyn. I've been writing background accordingly, which includes historical fluff like the warriors of the western plateau defenestrating priestesses of Lolth after their magic leaves again (in a post-magical world, the former has an unexpected advantage due to having swords and knowing how to use them). Maybe I'm overdoing it with the mutual-benefit cooperation and inspirationality and also Q'arlynd's youngest son stealing the Crescent Blade. We'll see.

My initial feverish burst of keyboard-pounding for Remembered Realms has died down, but I'm still chugging merrily along for the nonce. Trying to resist the temptation to shoehorn in all my homebrewed lore. There are flavor quotes I'm dying to reach a relevant chapter for.

Veldrin and Tarlyn are getting a lot chummier than I initially expected. Mayae's scheduled to join the melee pretty soon, Nathshalee not long after, so if I can choreograph properly things will get interesting (And Vhaeraun will accuse Eilistraee of throwing him off the Bifrost).

Yesterday was suddenly bitten again by the Old School Forgotten Realms bug, and have spent my spare time since in a frenzy of reading and writing. Hopefully I'll get something out of it that someone else can enjoy.

... I have been expending way too much thought (thought that would probably be better spent on continuing the original thing) on a Remembered Realms AU-off-AU wherein all the reincarnated gods are genderswapped (Male Luthic who by their own religious tradition is suddenly "above" the rest of the orc pantheon! Female Bane fighting with his own sexism! Male Eilistraee taking up Assimilationism in frustration! Female Selvetarm thinking it's pretty great to be a girl!). I guess there's potential for fiddling round with questions of gender roles and coding and such, but I suspect the real reason is I get to visualize rampant cross-dressing.

Larissa debuts

I sewed a rag doll of Larissa Fariha from Remembered Realms a while ago, adapting some patterns from an old book we had lying around the house, and I recently got hold of a digital camera. So take a gander, if you like.

Cut for size )

The dress is based on the one she wears in chapters eleven and twelve. Not real velvet, alas.

Because I was feeling nostalgic (see the little icon?) and just can't accept death. That garden ornament about dragging your loved one back from heaven that Elaine Cunningham thought was so creepy? I'd snap it up.

More than a year ago, while working on my wannabe Realms magnum opus/divine soap opera, I did character sketches of a dozen various folk I intended to use. That fizzled, and now I busy myself reusing their names in the Remembered Realms (Shardax the snarky Vhaeraunite spy is now Shardax the bereaved boyfriend of an Elaith Craulnober wannabe) and working them into the history and the flavor quotes.

Chaszyrd Thenduk is the latter case, and right now he gets a line at the start of Tarlyn's next chapter. Have his introduction from my old opus, tweaked slightly, in which the Selvetargtlin of Eryndlyn brainstorm new sacrificial rituals in the aftermath of Selvetarm telling Lolth to stuff it.

Selvetarm smiles on a death in battle against overwhelming odds, not a death in battle against a chit of a faerie priest waving a knife. )

Now in Remembered Realms his god's been offed, as per the book that Jossed my late lamented opus, but Chaszyrd lives on under the radar another couple hundred years, gets to be city "Weapons Master" after a number of bloody riots once Lolth's apparently followed suit, and goes on to have to an unreasonably long life, during which he produces a bunch of quotables.

Tsabrak in Remembered Realms timeline, I think, probably didn't live to see 1376.

Apparently they get it in Germany before they get it in the States. And if they're telling the truth about it, well.

Had time to kill on a cross-country flight recently, so I sketched myself up a Kiira and now I'm Paint.NETing it and inflicting it on the world. Cut for size.

My friends say I should act my age/What's my age again? )

Incidentally, Thirdborn Sun (Son in the original Undercommon, pun inserted in translation*) is a rock band, based in Eryndlyn and big on the random religious symbolism. (Cue Veldrin: "Do you even know what that means?" Well, he could figure out what the lyrics are actually saying, but he usually doesn't care)

*Incidentally-incidentally, I'm aware of a school of thought that thinks English-based puns in fantasy worlds are twee, with possible reason. All I can say is if a published Realms writer can have their character make cracks about "trends of tren" then I feel I can proceed somewhat at will.

Pointless tidbit of the day: When I was a kid and scouting out information for my school-assigned autobiography, my parents told me, among other things, that I was born later than scheduled (by less than a week, as it turned out, so not medically late) and joked it was because I didn't want to be a Halloween baby. Perhaps I was a psychic fetus and didn't want to set off any future delusions.

... as it is, I have to settle for the fifth of November.

(Can you spot the Death Note trivia semi-relevance? Huh? Huh?)

(ETA: And I thought of myself as a Pisces ever since I knew what they were. I kept nodding along with the descriptions of them in the astrology books, even the less flattering ones. When I finally did up my own star chart I was bitterly disappointed)

Now for a couple of crackdrabbles of "Remembered Realms meets selected bits of Death Note," to try and get it out of my system (though introductory psych tells me that venting, for example violence, makes it worse. Eh, anyway). Quasi-spoilers.

Kiira and Veldrin pinch-hit for L and Light, circa episode 12 )

Double drabble featuring Red Knight incarnation versus Cyricarnation, who in the regular 'verse are coming soon (for a given definition of soon) to a fanfic near you. Language )

Kiira is a perfectly legitimate elven word, and I still think it makes for an okay nickname on its own, but now I can't stop imagining them all toting Death Notes (in which case Nathshalee is actually lucky everyone forgot her preincarnation's name).
teakay: (Ovelia Horoscope)
The latest chapter's coming along slowly, but when I do finish it (perhaps sometime after I finish my finals) there'll be a lot going on in there. To prove I haven't been doing nothing in my free time but complaining on LJ and binging on clearanced Valentine's chocolate, here's a snippet from the current draft. Warning for language.

Some context, for the passerby )

Now books call them the Dark Seldarine, aillesel Seldarie, they'd tear it all to pieces if they could. )

So far there is not one chapter of Remembered Realms without a drow somewhere in it.

Chapter one: Kren Auzkovyn.
Chapter two: Veldrin and (briefly) Jezz Uloavae.
Chapter three: Mayae.
Chapter four: Tarlyn himself, and (briefly) Sannara.
Chapter five: Veldrin again, plus his dad.
Chapter six: Nathshalee herself, and the Kiaransaleen-wannabe.
Chapter seven: Dare and Sannara.

Further shenanigans are in the works for Grace and Theris and Ariel and folk as yet to be introduced (this being a Sweeping Epic and all), but still. Drow up to the eyeballs. Maybe I should give in and rename it, I don't know, "Remembered Realms: The Year of the Drow."
teakay: (Propositions)
Here's a little Remembered Realms-verse ficlet covering an incident in the lives of Veldrin Auzkovyn and Kiira Craulnober, two young gods reincarnated into a modern Faerun. Inspired by all the different holy days that fall on Midwinter in the Realms (relevant here are the Masked Lord's Embrace and the Graverending; if I messed up lore on the latter I probably did it on purpose), the idea of bits and pieces of "present" Faerunian culture being filtered into pop culture, Kiira's intermittent interest in zombies, and Veldrin being, for metaphysical reasons, the Faerunian equivalent of a Christmas baby (Kiira, meanwhile, was a leap-day baby). When he meets the reincarnations of Eilistraee, Kiaransalee, and Shevarash (at the least) they can all bond over that once they're done trying to kill each other. Or not.

Without further ado...

“I won’t sing.” )

So I've been piecing together bits of history and modernized culture for my Forgotten Realms futureverse, which is also an opportunity to make even more hammerlicious injokes which may or may not ever see the light of day. I'm particularly proud of Rizzen Elfkin and Mirza of the Swamp.

So then I threw in Alindkach and Siora, a couple of gay Vhaeraunite poet-philosophers who live in Eryndlyn circa the events of the Lady Penitent series. Alindkach is a Masked Traitor who was converted from Lolthianism, possibly experimented with Ghaunadaur, pretended to be a priest of Selvetarm and eventually became a priest of Eilistraee, so he has quite a wide theological perspective. Meanwhile, Siora's concept started as a takeoff of some people's beliefs about lesbian relationships i.e. that they're somehow inherently purer and nicer than anything involving guys. Siora holds that given the ginormous gender bias of drow society, even apparent within the fluffyduffy Eilistraeens, homosexuality is the only way male drow can find Twu Wub and a partner who Really Understands them.

They're both dead by the time of Remembered Realms, but some of the characters have read their work in college or whatever. Oh yes, and they may or may not have had a relationship. And now they've taken over my brain. This is really not a good time to have a plotbunny invasion.
teakay: (Queklain Horoscope)
I've been thinking on this a while, and thought I might as well spit it out. What better place to do it than here? Note: vague floating spoilers for various Forgotten Realms drow books.

I've been working on giving some complexity to Mayae Veladorn, the reincarnation of Eilistraee in my fic "Remembered Realms." I'm trying to keep her from turning into a generic Fluffy Angsty Sue (though given that she's the reincarnation of a goddess it may be a bit too late for that), while drawing off Eilistraee's canonical traits, but now I'm wondering if my efforts are going too far the other direction.
