Latest nostalgic timesink: Final Fantasy Tactics. Playing the retranslated PSP version this time. Sometimes it comes across as trying too hard, or fixing what ain't broke (i.e. gratuitously retranslating Rafa and Malak - what, did Bioware threaten to sue?) but that's sometimes, and I hardly even notice the lag anymore. Also, WIEGRAAAF.
And because I have nothing more productive to do with my time, I've been brooding over Harry Potter - the aggregate, from the base canon to Word of God to fandom. The more I brood over things more eloquent people have pointed out a billion times before, and some particularly stupid counterarguments, the more various aspects bother me. Brushing off a superfluous torture curse from Our Hero (which, he reminds us, you have to mean) as "Well, this is war" as if war suddenly makes torture okay when he could've easily used a less ethically questionable means of incapacitation. A teenage girl who knuckles under to authority figures she ought to trust in reasonable times is absolutely unforgivable and deserving of being scarred for life (if I ever dig up Remembered Realms from its shallow grave, "I loathe a traitor" is likely to be gratuitously stuffed into Banecarnation's mouth, because Lawful Evil dude that he is, he appreciates a loyal employee), while a teenage boy who viciously bullies another boy for the crime of existing (from his own mouth!) isn't. "Emaciated" girls who buy into societal standards of beauty etc. are "stupid" and "Pansies" to be sneered at, as opposed to the Hermiones of the world who are obviously above it all. A child who's conceived from rape is literally incapable of feeling love, which makes all the yatter about the importance of choices somewhat moot. There's nothing disturbing about the image of turning your back on a baby in pain just as long as it's an evil baby. And, and, ARGH.
Would that I were famous enough to have my writing so dissected. And rich. Rich would be nice.
